Mobility Training

What’s all the fuss about?

Whether you have heard of mobility training before or not, it’s gaining increasing popularity
within the fitness industry and for good reason. Many athletes and sporting teams are
including mobility programs in their workouts to help improve their performance and
reduce injuries.

So, you’ve heard of flexibility but not mobility. Is there a difference? Yes!

Flexibility is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to lengthen passively through a range of
motion – this is usually part of your post workout cool down, using specific exercises and
long holds to stretch and lengthen your muscles.

Mobility, however, is the ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion.
In mobility training, we are trying to increase our awareness of our body’s positions and
movements. It involves flexibility, strength, and motor control, as your central nervous
system will try to keep your body safe by limiting its mobility depending on how much
control you have. Mobility training uses body weight exercises or props to create internal
tension to increase the strength of contraction in the area we’re trying to train.

Incorporating mobility exercises that actively increase our range of motion and increase our
control of the muscles surrounding our joints will help us move, perform, and recover
better.
